Paramagudi lies on the Vaigai River in Ramanathapuram district. For much of the year the riverbed is wide and sandy, and on a map it cuts a clear diagonal through the town. The older settlement is a tight mesh of narrow streets and lanes. Around it, newer areas and roads fan out across the flat, largely agricultural plain.
The town is known for handloom weaving, and textiles have long been at the centre of its economy and identity. It is also known as the hometown of the actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan. Tanks and irrigation ponds dot the surrounding district, typical of this dry part of Tamil Nadu, and appear on the map as small irregular shapes among the fields.
