Te mapa
Pearl City sits on Oahu's southern side, where the land slopes down to the inner lochs of Pearl Harbor. The map has two clear parts. The lower area, near the water and the H-1 freeway, has a denser street network. Higher up, residential streets follow long ridges that extend towards the Koʻolau Range, separated by steep, wooded gulches. The harbour's lochs break the shoreline into several peninsulas.
The community takes its name from the pearl oysters that once lived in the harbour's waters. Today Pearlridge Center, one of Hawaii's largest shopping centres, lies at its edge. A path along the shore follows the old railway route, and the waters nearby are closely associated with the attack of December 1941.
A Pearl City map poster captures the fingers of land between water and ridges. Streets run like branches along the high ground, while the lochs create soft, irregular shapes below. For people who grew up here, it is instantly familiar: the drive up the hill, the view of the harbour, the way down to the shore.
Branching inner bays shape the lower edge of the map. They split the shoreline into peninsulas with calm water between them.
Residential streets run up long ridges towards the mountains. Each follows its spine of land between steep gulches.
The main freeway crosses the lower part of the community. It is a strong line separating the waterfront from the hillside streets.
