Te mapa
Phong Thạnh lies in the far south of Vietnam, in the lower Mekong Delta, now part of Cà Mau province. The landscape is almost completely flat, and water organises everything. On a map, straight canals cut across the land in long lines. Houses and roads follow their banks, and the spaces between them are filled with rice fields and aquaculture ponds.
This is a rural area, not a compact city. Settlement runs in ribbons along the waterways instead of gathering around one centre. Bridges cross the canals at intervals, and small markets and schools stand where roads and water meet. The pattern reflects generations of people draining, farming and living with water.
A Phong Thạnh map poster turns this network of canals and ponds into an almost abstract image. The long straight lines of water, the rectangles of ponds and fields, and the thin roads beside them make a composition that is unusual and precise. In black and white, the delta landscape looks like a technical drawing.
Long straight canals cross the land and set the direction of roads and houses. They are the strongest lines on the map.
Rectangular ponds fill much of the space between canals. On the poster they form a regular, tiled pattern.
Homes and small roads run along the canal banks instead of forming a centre. This gives the map its linear, stretched character.
