Pointe-à-Pitre is the economic centre and main port of Guadeloupe. It sits on Grande-Terre close to the Rivière Salée, the narrow channel separating it from Basse-Terre. The old town is laid out as a regular grid of narrow streets. It runs down to the harbour, where quays and docks form sharp edges along the bay.
At the heart of the grid lies the Place de la Victoire, a large open square near the waterfront. Along the shore stands the Mémorial ACTe, a memorial and centre dedicated to the history of slavery. The poet Saint-John Perse, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, was born in the city. The wider urban area spreads over mangroves and low ground around the bay.
A Pointe-à-Pitre map poster is often chosen by people of Guadeloupean heritage living in mainland France or elsewhere, and by visitors who arrived through its port. It shows a compact Caribbean city. The rigid grid on the waterfront contrasts with the irregular coast and mangrove channels around it.
Narrow parallel streets run down to the quays in a tight grid, the historic core of Guadeloupe's main commercial city.
The large square near the waterfront opens a clear space in the dense grid, the city's best-known public place.
The narrow sea channel nearby separates Grande-Terre from Basse-Terre, the dividing line that gives Guadeloupe its butterfly shape.

Koteā ko Pointe-à-Pitre
For the Guadeloupean diaspora, Pointe-à-Pitre is where family stories are set: the market, the harbour, the square. A map of its streets keeps those places close, wherever home is now.
Add a family name or a date to the title and subtitle, and edit the coordinates. The five styles are Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Noir makes the harbour and bay stand out strongly.
