Puchi is a small settlement in the Longnan area of southern Gansu, a region of high ridges and deep valleys on the southern edge of the province. Here the mountains dominate everything, and the few areas of flat land are claimed by villages, fields and the roads that link them, all squeezed between steep slopes.
Seen from above, the settlement pattern is linear rather than round. Houses and lanes line up along the valley, and the road network forms a thin thread with occasional side branches that climb away into the hills. The contrast between this narrow built strip and the empty mountainsides around it is striking.
A Puchi map poster keeps that contrast intact. Large areas of open space frame a slender band of streets, so the finished print feels spacious and quiet.
