Te mapa
Pyt-Yakh is a city in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug in Western Siberia, founded in the late twentieth century to serve the oil fields of the region. Like many towns in the area, it was built in stages as the industry grew. From above, it looks planned: compact housing blocks set in the middle of a very wide, very wet landscape.
A Pyt-Yakh map poster shows the town's microdistricts, the self-contained residential blocks typical of Soviet-era planning, arranged along main roads. Around them the land breaks into rivers, oxbow lakes, bogs and forest, so the built-up area appears as a firm island of straight lines surrounded by softer, irregular natural shapes.
The town's name comes from a local river, and roads and pipelines link it to the oil fields and to larger regional centres such as Nefteyugansk. There is little old architecture here; the story of the place is modern and industrial. On paper, the contrast between the orderly blocks and the waterlogged taiga around them is the whole picture.
Residential areas are grouped into large, regular blocks with interior courtyards, a planned layout that shows up clearly as neat rectangles on the map.
Winding rivers, small lakes and marshland surround the town, creating an intricate natural pattern around the straight lines of the streets.
Long roads leave the town toward the surrounding oil fields and neighbouring cities, crossing the flat taiga in straight, isolated lines.

Koteā ko Pyt-Yakh
For the people who came to Pyt-Yakh to work in oil and stayed, or grew up there and left, the map is a record of a home built from scratch in the taiga. Its clean blocks look strong in a simple frame.
