Te mapa
Quận Năm, District 5 of Ho Chi Minh City, covers much of the historic Chinese quarter of Chợ Lớn. From above, it has one of the densest street patterns in the city. There are long main roads running east-west, a thick grid of cross streets and many narrow lanes inside the blocks. Along the southern edge runs a canal, the waterway that once carried rice and goods from the Mekong Delta to the markets here.
Chợ Lớn began as a separate trading town founded by Chinese merchants, and grew into the city's commercial heart for the Chinese community. The district still has many assembly halls and temples built by different Chinese communities, as well as wholesale streets that each specialise in particular goods. The district is also home to several of the city's large hospitals and universities, whose grounds show up as larger blocks in the grid.
A Quận Năm map poster captures an extraordinary level of detail. Streets, lanes and alleys fill almost the entire print, the canal defines the southern edge and larger institutional sites break the pattern in a few places. In monochrome, the density becomes almost like a woven texture. It is a portrait of one of the oldest and most characterful parts of Saigon.

Main roads, cross streets and narrow alleys cover almost every part of the district. The result is one of the most intricate patterns in the city.
Hospitals, universities and temple complexes appear as larger, calmer shapes among the fine grain of shophouse streets.
