Te mapa
Quincy sits on high ground above the east bank of the Mississippi, and its map is a clear example of a nineteenth-century river town. A regular grid of streets runs back from the bluffs, blocks repeating in even rows, while the river and its low floodplain form a broad empty band along the western edge.
The city hosted the sixth Lincoln-Douglas debate in 1858, remembered today at Washington Park in the downtown grid. Quincy grew as a river port and manufacturing town, and its nickname, the Gem City, is still widely used. Bridges carry roads west across the Mississippi toward Missouri, drawing strong lines over the water.
A Quincy map poster captures the contrast between order and nature: square city blocks to the east, the winding channel and its islands to the west. The composition is simple and graphic, which is why river cities like this one translate so well into a black-and-white print.
The river runs along the whole western side of the city, with islands and backwaters that create a soft, irregular edge against the regular grid.
Streets run in a steady rectangular pattern from the bluffs inland, giving the centre of the map an even, almost woven texture.
Two road bridges cross the Mississippi toward Missouri, the clearest straight lines over the water and the main link to the western bank.

Koteā ko Quincy
Quincy is a place people often leave for work and remember with affection, and a map of its grid above the river is an understated way to keep that connection visible at home.
