Radford is an independent city in southwestern Virginia, built along the New River in the valleys of the Blue Ridge region. The river is central to its map. It curves along the edge of town, and the streets run roughly parallel to it on the higher ground above, creating a long, stretched urban shape.
Radford University occupies a large campus near the centre. Its academic buildings, quads and residence halls form a clear cluster in the street plan. Around it, older residential blocks and a main commercial street link the campus to the rest of the city. Rail lines and bridges add strong lines across the river valley.
