Te mapa
Rajamahendravaram, long known as Rajahmundry, stands on the east bank of the Godavari in Andhra Pradesh. Here the river is broad and scattered with sandbanks and islands, and that expanse of water dominates the map. The city runs along the bank in a long band. Several bridges stretch across to Kovvur on the far side, some of them among the longest in India.
The city is often called the cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh. It is linked with Nannaya, the eleventh-century poet traditionally credited with beginning the Telugu Mahabharata. Its riverfront ghats draw large crowds during the Godavari Pushkaralu, a festival held every twelve years. Downstream, the Dowleswaram barrage, built in the nineteenth century, feeds the irrigation canals of the Godavari delta.
A Rajamahendravaram map poster reads as a meeting of city and river. Dense older streets sit close to the ghats, newer areas extend inland to the east, and railway lines cut straight paths through the pattern. The parallel bridges over the Godavari are the most memorable feature of the composition: fine lines drawn across a wide, pale field of water.
Road and rail bridges run side by side across the river toward Kovvur, including the arched railway bridge. On the poster they appear as long parallel strokes over the water.
Stepped bathing ghats line the eastern bank near the old town. They mark where the densest streets meet the river, and they fill with pilgrims during Pushkaralu.
The Godavari here is wide enough to hold islands and shifting sandbars. They break the water into several channels and add soft shapes to the map.
