Te mapa
Rameswaram is on Pamban Island, off the southeastern coast of Tamil Nadu, between the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay. On a map, the island is a long, low strip of sand. It is linked to the mainland by the Pamban road bridge and the railway bridge next to it, and the eastern end tapers into the narrow spit leading to Dhanushkodi.
The town centres on the Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in India and famous for its very long pillared corridors. Streets form a rough square around the temple complex, and the town's life is shaped by pilgrims who come to bathe in the sea and the temple's sacred wells.
Beyond Dhanushkodi, a chain of shoals called Adam's Bridge, or Rama Setu, continues toward Sri Lanka. Rameswaram is also known as the hometown of former Indian president A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. A Rameswaram map poster shows the island's thin outline, the temple-centred grid and the bridges linking it to the mainland.
Road and rail bridges cross the Pamban channel side by side, forming long straight lines across the water between Pamban Island and the mainland.
The streets of the town wrap around the rectangular Ramanathaswamy Temple complex, so the temple is the obvious centre of the map.
The island narrows eastward into a slender sand spit toward Dhanushkodi, pointing across the shoals of Adam's Bridge toward Sri Lanka.
