Ramsgate sits on the Isle of Thanet at the eastern tip of Kent. Its defining feature from above is the harbour, enclosed by long stone piers that reach into the sea and form a sheltered basin. It holds the unusual title of Royal Harbour, granted by George IV in the nineteenth century.
The town rises from the harbour onto the chalk cliffs to the east and west, with terraces and crescents following the cliff tops and roads zigzagging down to the waterfront. During the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940, Ramsgate was one of the ports that received troops brought back across the Channel.
