Te mapa
Reykjavík lies on a peninsula on the south side of Faxaflói bay in south-west Iceland. The old centre sits between the harbour and a small lake, Tjörnin, and from above it is a compact grid of low houses and short streets. Beyond it, the city spreads east and south in wide suburbs, while the sea frames it on several sides.
According to tradition, the first permanent settler in Iceland, Ingólfur Arnarson, made his home here in the ninth century. Today Reykjavík is the northernmost capital of a sovereign state. Hallgrímskirkja, the concrete church on the hill above the centre, and the Harpa concert hall on the harbour are two of its best-known landmarks.
A Reykjavík map poster shows a city shaped by water: the harbour and its breakwaters, the curving coastline, the lake in the middle of town and the airport's runways close to the centre. In black and white, the coast and inlets become the strongest lines in the design.
The harbour sits at the northern edge of the centre, protected by long breakwaters. On the map its piers and basins form sharp shapes against the open water of the bay.
The small lake lies right beside the old town and city hall. It creates a pale, rounded shape amid the tight grid of streets around it.
Reykjavík is surrounded by sea on several sides, with inlets and headlands along the edge. The coastline gives the poster a complex, instantly recognisable outline.
