Te mapa
Richard-Toll lies on the south bank of the Senegal River, in northern Senegal, with Mauritania on the opposite shore. From above, the river is the defining line. It curves along the northern edge of town, while the Taouey channel links it to the Lac de Guiers to the south. The town sits at this meeting of waters, in otherwise dry Sahelian country.
The name recalls a French colonial-era garden established here in the nineteenth century by a gardener named Richard, with toll meaning garden in Wolof. Today the town is known above all for sugar. A Richard-Toll map poster shows the result: large rectangular cane fields and irrigation channels stretching across the plain, laid out in a precise agricultural grid.
The town itself is compact, with a regular street pattern near the river and the main road running east–west along the valley. In black and white, the contrast is strong. The winding natural river faces the straight geometry of irrigated fields. Together they show clearly how water shapes settlement in the Senegal valley.
The broad river bends along the northern edge of the map and marks the border with Mauritania, giving the poster its main natural line.
A waterway runs south from the river toward the Lac de Guiers, dividing the town's surroundings and feeding the irrigation system.
Large rectangular plots of sugar cane and straight irrigation canals form a precise, almost abstract pattern across the flat valley.
