Te mapa
Ruangwa is a district town in the Lindi Region of south-eastern Tanzania, some way inland from the Indian Ocean coast. The map shows a modest centre where a few main roads meet. The streets around them are laid out in a loose, irregular way, and they quickly give way to fields, tracks and scattered settlements in low, rolling land.
Farming shapes the district, with cashew and sesame among the familiar crops of southern Tanzania. You can see this on the map in the wide gaps between villages and the thin lines of rural roads that tie them to the town. The centre is where these roads come together, so the plan has a clear middle and a looser outer ring.
A Ruangwa map poster shows a town at an early stage of growth, with roads that matter more than blocks and plenty of open space around the edges. In monochrome it reads as an honest portrait of an inland district town, easy to place on a wall and easy to recognise for anyone who knows it.
The centre forms where several district roads come together. Their junction is the anchor of the map, and the town's streets branch off it in shorter, finer lines.
The streets do not follow a strict grid. Instead they fit around plots, markets and older paths, which gives the layout an organic look when drawn in fine black lines.
Ruangwa is well back from the coast, surrounded by low hills and farmland. Around the poster's edges you see open ground and minor tracks, with no shoreline in sight.
