Te mapa
Sagae lies in the Murayama basin of Yamagata Prefecture, near where the Sagae River meets the Mogami River, one of the principal rivers of northern Honshu. The town sits on the flat valley floor with mountains rising to the west. The rivers and the gentle slopes give the map its structure: water on one side, orderly blocks in the middle, cultivated land around the edges.
The region is known for fruit, especially cherries, and orchards and fields fill much of the land around the built-up area. The Mogami runs in wide curves with broad floodplains, which appear on a map as open space along the town's eastern side. Rail and road lines cross the basin in straight strokes that link Sagae with neighbouring towns in the prefecture.
A Sagae map poster captures the order of a Japanese provincial town set in farming country. The streets of the centre form a grid of small blocks. The rivers bring long flowing lines into that grid, and the pattern loosens gradually into scattered hamlets and field roads. In black and white the result is calm and even, with the water as its most expressive element.
The wide Mogami River curves past the town. Its generous floodplain appears as a soft band of open space along one edge of the map.
The smaller Sagae River runs through the area to join the Mogami. Its channel cuts diagonally across the regular pattern of streets.
Fruit orchards and fields surround the town. On the map they form open ground laced with narrow farm roads between the built-up areas.

Koteā ko Sagae
For people from Sagae or anyone with memories of the Yamagata basin, the map holds its rivers, orchards and quiet streets in one frame. It is a restrained piece that suits minimalist Japanese interiors.
