Te mapa
Sainthia lies in Birbhum district in western West Bengal, on the bank of the Mayurakshi River. Two features dominate its map. The first is the river, a broad channel with sandbanks that changes with the seasons. The second is the railway: Sainthia is an important junction, and the lines running through it set the shape of the town as much as the water does.
The town is also known for the Nandikeshwari temple, a Shakti Peetha that draws pilgrims throughout the year. The streets around it and around the station form the busiest part of Sainthia. Further out, lanes become narrower and less regular, and houses mix with ponds, small fields and groves in the way that is typical of rural Bengal.
A Sainthia map poster shows the town as it is organised: along the tracks, beside the river, and around a few well-used centres. The black-and-white style picks out the long straight railway lines against the looser weave of lanes, with the river curving past. It makes a grounded, honest picture of a working town.
The river runs along the town's edge in a wide bed marked by sandbanks, one of the most distinctive shapes on the poster.
Straight railway lines meet and pass through the town, dividing neighbourhoods and giving the map a firm geometric backbone.
The area around the Nandikeshwari temple is one of the most visited parts of town, surrounded by close-set lanes and small shops.
