San Juan Capistrano lies in southern Orange County, a few kilometres inland from the Pacific at Dana Point. The town occupies a valley where Trabuco Creek joins San Juan Creek, with hills and ridges rising on all sides. From above, a small historic core around the mission gives way to curving suburban streets, equestrian areas and open slopes, while Interstate 5 runs through the valley.
Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1776 and is one of the best known of the California missions. Its ruined Great Stone Church and adobe buildings sit at the heart of the town. The mission is famous for the return of the cliff swallows each spring, traditionally celebrated on 19 March. Nearby, the Los Rios district preserves some of the oldest residences in California.
A San Juan Capistrano map poster shows a town clearly defined by terrain. The creeks draw two soft lines through the valley, the freeway and railway run alongside them, and the neighbourhoods fan out into the surrounding hills in curving loops and cul-de-sacs. In black and white, the compact mission grounds at the centre give the composition a quiet focal point.
The mission complex forms a compact rectangle near the centre of town, surrounded by the older streets that grew up around it.
The creek winds through the valley toward the ocean, joined by Trabuco Creek, their paired courses shaping the layout of roads and neighbourhoods.
On the slopes around the valley, residential streets curve and branch into cul-de-sacs, creating the flowing, contour-like patterns typical of Southern California.
