Te mapa
São Raimundo Nonato lies in the semi-arid sertão of southern Piauí, in northeastern Brazil. It is the nearest town to Serra da Capivara National Park, and on the map it appears as a compact settlement on open, gently rolling ground, with roads leaving in several directions across the caatinga, the thorny dry forest that covers the region.
The centre is arranged in blocks around its older core, with newer neighbourhoods extending outward along the roads. Seasonal watercourses cross the surrounding land, dry for much of the year, and to the east the terrain rises towards the escarpments and canyons of the national park.
Serra da Capivara is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for thousands of prehistoric rock paintings, and the town hosts the Museu do Homem Americano, which presents research from the park. A São Raimundo Nonato map poster shows the modest town that serves as a base for one of the most important archaeological landscapes in the Americas.
The older core forms a small, dense cluster of blocks, and on the print it stands out clearly against the open land that surrounds it on every side.
Several roads radiate from town across the dry countryside, including the route east towards the national park, straight lines on an otherwise sparse sheet.
Watercourses that fill only in the rainy season trace thin, branching lines across the map, a reminder of how much the region depends on water.
