Te mapa
Sault Ste. Marie stands on the north bank of the St. Marys River, the short, fast channel that carries water from Lake Superior down to Lake Huron. Across the river lies its namesake twin, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. On a map the river dominates: a broad band of water with islands, rapids and dredged shipping channels, and the city's streets gathered along the Canadian shore.
The rapids once blocked navigation, so locks were built on both sides of the border. The Canadian lock sits on a small island by the downtown waterfront, while the larger Soo Locks on the American side carry the big lake freighters. The International Bridge arches over the river and locks in a long curve, one of the most distinctive shapes on the poster.
Along the waterfront, a boardwalk and parks give way to the large industrial footprint of the steel mill to the west. Inland, a mostly regular grid climbs gently toward the hills of the Canadian Shield. A Sault Ste. Marie map poster shows the whole system at once: lake, rapids, locks, bridge and a city arranged along the water.

Narrow lock chambers sit beside the white-water rapids. They appear as precise straight lines within the river, set against the natural channels and islands.
The downtown shore runs along the river with parkland and a boardwalk, with the steel plant's large industrial blocks further west. The contrast gives the map strong horizontal structure.

Koteā ko Sault Ste. Marie
Few cities have a clearer reason to exist than Sault Ste. Marie, sitting exactly where the Great Lakes step down. That makes its map compelling for residents, sailors, engineers and anyone who has watched a freighter pass through the locks.
