Say Map Poster & Print

Say lies on the Niger River in south-western Niger, downstream from the capital Niamey. From above, the river is the dominant feature, a broad channel with sandbanks and islands, and the town spreads along its bank in a pattern of streets and compounds that stops where the dry savanna begins.

Say has long been known as a religious and scholarly centre, and for centuries it was a crossing point and meeting place on the river. Further south, the land toward the borders with Benin and Burkina Faso includes the W National Park, one of the region's major protected areas.

A Say map poster shows a town defined by the Niger. The river's width, its islands and the green strips along its banks take up much of the frame, while the town's streets form a compact block on one side. It's a simple composition, but a strong one, typical of the Sahel's river towns.

The Niger River

The river runs past Say in a broad channel with sandbanks and islands, the largest and most striking shape on the map, varying in width with the seasons.

02

Riverside town

Say's streets and compounds cluster close to the water, forming a dense area along the bank before thinning out into the savanna behind the town.

03

Sahel surroundings

Away from the river, the land becomes open and dry, with only a few tracks. On the poster, this becomes calm open space around the town.
