Shahr-e Bābak lies on a high plateau in the northwest of Kerman province, surrounded by mountains and arid plains. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets set in a wide, open landscape. Main roads lead out across the plateau toward neighbouring towns, and around the edges, lines of cultivation and orchards follow the paths of water.
The county is known for the village of Meymand, where people have lived for centuries in dwellings carved into soft rock. The village is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage cultural landscape, and its semi-nomadic way of life follows the seasons between summer and winter settlements.
