Te mapa
Shakhtarsk grew from several mining settlements in the Donetsk coal basin. Its name comes from the word for a mine shaft, and coal shaped almost everything about its development. Rather than one compact core, the town formed around a series of pits. On a map this shows as several clusters of streets linked by roads and railway lines.
The terrain of the Donbas steppe is gently rolling, cut by ravines and dotted with the conical spoil heaps left by decades of mining. These heaps are among the most recognisable features of the region. Reservoirs and small streams add scattered patches of water to the landscape around the town.
A Shakhtarsk map poster captures an industrial town in outline: residential blocks, former mine sites, rail tracks and open steppe between them. The composition is less about a single centre than about how the town is spread out, with each district tied to the work that once defined it.
The town is made up of separate clusters of streets, each originally grouped around a pit. This gives the map a scattered, multi-centred look.
Railway tracks once used to carry coal link the districts together. Their long, straight lines give structure to the looser street network.
Open land, shallow ravines and small reservoirs fill the spaces between districts, leaving generous empty areas around the built-up parts of the poster.
