Shangpa Map Poster & Print
Shangpa is the seat of Fugong County in the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, in the far west of Yunnan. It lies in the deep gorge of the Nu River, known further downstream as the Salween. On a map the town is a long, narrow strip. It is squeezed onto the little flat ground between the fast-flowing river and mountains that rise steeply on both sides.
The Nu River gorge is one of the deepest river valleys in China and belongs to the region of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main road follows the river, and bridges cross to the opposite bank. Villages cling to the slopes above the town, connected by winding tracks.
