Shantou sits on the eastern coast of Guangdong, where the Rongjiang and Hanjiang rivers reach the South China Sea. The city is split by a wide bay, with the older northern half facing the southern districts across the water. On a map, the bay is the central shape, a broad inlet opening to the sea and crossed by long bridges.
The old town has one of the most distinctive street patterns in southern China. Its streets radiate outward from Xiaogongyuan, a small park and pavilion, in a fan of straight lanes lined with arcaded buildings from the early twentieth century. Around this historic core, newer districts spread in regular blocks toward the coast and the river mouths.
Shantou became one of China's first Special Economic Zones in 1980, and it remains the main city of the Chaoshan region, known for its own dialect, cuisine and tea culture. A Shantou map poster shows both sides of that story: the radial old port and the planned city that grew beside it on the bay.

A wide inlet divides the city between north and south, its open water sitting at the centre of the poster and crossed by long road bridges.
Branches of the Rongjiang and Hanjiang reach the sea around the city, cutting the flat coastal land into islands and peninsulas.

Shantou speaks to the Chaoshan diaspora across Southeast Asia and beyond, and to anyone who has walked the arcades of its old town. The radial streets alone make a memorable, almost architectural print.
