Te mapa
Shaqra lies in the Al-Washm region of Najd, northwest of Riyadh, on open plateau country crossed by dry valleys. From above, the modern town follows a broad, regular grid of wide roads and large blocks, while the historic centre stands out as a tight cluster of narrow lanes. Farms and palm groves appear as green-edged patches on the outskirts, with desert beyond.
Shaqra was historically the main town of Al-Washm, and its old quarter of mud-brick houses and walls has been restored as a heritage site. The nearby village of Ushaiqer is one of the best-known traditional settlements in the region. The town is also home to Shaqra University. Together, old and new quarters show how Najdi towns looked before and after the oil era.
A Shaqra map poster captures a contrast typical of central Arabia: the organic old town, shaped for shade and defence, set against the generous, car-scaled grid that grew around it. In Sand or Paper style the design feels close to the colours of the landscape, while Noir makes the street pattern sharp and graphic.
The restored old town forms a dense patch of narrow, irregular lanes, instantly different from the open grid that surrounds it on every side.
Wide avenues and large rectangular blocks extend in every direction, giving the map a strong, orderly structure typical of Saudi towns planned for cars.
On the edges of the town, farms and palm groves form irregular enclosures, marking where water has allowed cultivation in the desert.
