Te mapa
Shelekhov lies just south-west of Irkutsk, on the left bank of the Irkut River, upstream of where it joins the Angara. The town was founded in the 1950s together with a large aluminium smelter, and its map shows that origin clearly: planned residential districts with regular blocks and broad streets, kept apart from the large industrial site. Forest and river floodplain frame the town on several sides.
The town is named after Grigory Shelikhov, the eighteenth-century merchant and explorer who helped establish Russian settlements in Alaska. The Irkutsk aluminium plant remains a major employer and one of the largest industrial sites in the region, and the town's roads link it with Irkutsk and with the highway toward the southern shore of Lake Baikal.
A Shelekhov map poster shows a Soviet-era plan in its setting: microdistricts laid out in orderly patterns, wide avenues between them, the long rectangular form of the plant, and the Irkut winding through open ground. In black and white, the contrast between planned geometry and natural curves gives the map a clear, deliberate balance.
Residential areas are laid out as regular microdistricts, with apartment blocks in orderly patterns and wide streets dividing one section from the next.
The aluminium plant takes up a large, separate area away from the housing, and its long buildings form a bold geometric block on the map.
The river curves past the town with its floodplain and side channels, a natural, winding counterpoint to the straight lines of the planned streets.
