Te mapa
Shido lies on the northern coast of Kagawa, on Shikoku, where a shallow bay opens onto the Seto Inland Sea. Today it is part of the city of Sanuki. On a map the curved shoreline of the bay gives the area a gentle edge. The town runs along the coast, and a railway and main roads follow the water.
Inland, the land is flat and divided into rice fields and small plots, with scattered ponds, a characteristic feature of Kagawa, where irrigation reservoirs are common. Hills rise to the south and east, closing the plain. Streets near the station and the old centre are closely built, while newer housing follows the roads into the fields.
Shido is best known for Shido-ji, the 86th temple of the Shikoku pilgrimage of 88 temples, visited by pilgrims walking or driving around the island. A Shido map poster brings together the bay, the temple town and the quiet farmland beyond: a small, well-ordered corner of Shikoku.

Streets gather near Shido-ji, one of the stops on the 88-temple Shikoku pilgrimage, which has shaped the town for centuries.
Small reservoirs scattered across the farmland appear as pale shapes among the fields, a feature typical of the Sanuki plain.

Koteā ko Shido
Shido is for pilgrims who passed through on the henro route and for people who grew up by the bay. The map keeps a record of that journey or home in a quiet, calm form.
