Te mapa
Shilin sits on a high plateau southeast of Kunming. The county takes its name from the limestone pinnacles nearby, since shilin means stone forest. On a map the town itself is modest: a small set of streets around a central core, with roads heading out toward farmland, reservoirs and the scattered karst ground that surrounds it on several sides.
The Stone Forest is part of the South China Karst World Heritage site, which UNESCO inscribed in 2007. From above it looks very different from the town. Paths wind between blocks of rock instead of following any grid, and the lines loosen into irregular loops and dead ends. Having both kinds of pattern in one frame makes a strong contrast.
A Shilin map poster keeps the town at the centre and lets the plateau fill the edges. The county is home to the Sani, a branch of the Yi people, and the region is known for the legend of Ashima, which is told in songs and in a well-known film from 1964. On paper, though, the story is told by roads, water and open land.
Walkways inside the karst area curl between the limestone formations. They make a tangle of short, looping lines that looks nothing like the straighter streets of the town next to them.
Around the built-up area, rural roads divide the plateau into fields and small settlements. This gives the outer edges of the poster a looser, more open texture.
The streets of the county seat form a small core that is easy to read. It is dense enough to anchor the composition and still leaves plenty of quiet space around it.
