Te mapa
Shiozawa lies in the Uonuma area of southern Niigata and has been part of Minamiuonuma city since 2005. The town follows the valley of the Uono River. From above, a narrow strip of streets runs alongside the railway and main road, and on both sides the valley floor turns into a neat mesh of rice paddies before the land rises into wooded slopes.
This is snow country. Winter snowfall here is among the heaviest in Japan's inhabited areas, and the town is known for Shiozawa tsumugi, a hand-woven silk textile traditionally bleached on the snow. In the nineteenth century, a Shiozawa merchant named Suzuki Bokushi wrote Hokuetsu Seppu, a well-known account of life under deep snow. Uonuma rice is also highly valued.
A Shiozawa map poster traces the long shape of the valley: the river's curves, the lines of the Joetsu railway and the expressway, and the town's streets pressed between them. The rectangular paddies give the open areas a fine, regular texture, framed by the soft, unmarked mass of the mountains on either side.
The river runs the length of the valley in gentle bends, setting the direction for roads, railway and settlement.
Flat rice fields fill the valley floor in small rectangles divided by farm lanes and irrigation channels, giving the map a woven texture.
Rail and expressway run side by side through the narrow valley, the main lines connecting this part of Niigata to Tokyo.

Koteā ko Shiozawa
Shiozawa is a place that people remember by its seasons, for its deep winters and green summers of rice. A clean line map of the valley town is a quiet way to keep that landscape on the wall, whether it was home or a winter trip.
