Te mapa
Shuanghekou lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep hills, terraced slopes and narrow river valleys. On a map the town appears as a close cluster of streets squeezed into the valley floor, with roads winding along the contours and following the watercourses. The surrounding land is mostly rugged, with smaller settlements scattered across the slopes.
The name Shuanghekou means roughly 'mouth of the two rivers', a reference to the meeting of waters that has shaped the site. Many towns in this part of China share similar names, and each one reflects the same logic: settlements formed where valleys converge and flat ground is scarce.
A Shuanghekou map poster shows how a town adapts to difficult terrain. Streets follow streams rather than a grid, roads switchback across the hills, and the built area remains compact and irregular. The result is an organic, flowing composition that feels very different from towns on open plains.
The town grew where watercourses join, and the valleys they carve define the shape of the built area and the paths of the main roads.
Buildings and streets crowd onto the limited flat land in the valleys, forming a narrow, irregular cluster rather than a regular grid.
Outside the centre, roads curve along the steep slopes of the surrounding hills, drawing loose, looping lines across the edges of the poster.
