Šiauliai Map Poster & Print
Šiauliai is the fourth-largest city in Lithuania and the main centre of the country's north. On the map, water frames the city. Lake Talša lies close to the centre, and the larger Lake Rėkyva spreads out to the south, surrounded by forest and wetland. Between the two, the streets form a fairly regular grid of blocks.
Much of the historic town was destroyed in the wars of the twentieth century, and the centre was largely rebuilt. Its spine is Vilniaus Street, a long pedestrian avenue. The Renaissance Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, with its tall white tower, stands on a rise nearby and is visible across the city.
About twelve kilometres north of the city is the Hill of Crosses, where pilgrims and visitors have placed hundreds of thousands of crosses.
