Te mapa
Sligo is the main town of County Sligo, built where the Garavogue River runs its brief course from Lough Gill to Sligo Bay. On a map the river divides the centre into two halves joined by several bridges. The lake spreads to the east and the tidal bay opens to the west, so the town sits in an unusually watery setting.
The streets of the old centre follow the river and the lines of the medieval town that grew around Sligo Abbey, a ruined Dominican friary founded in the thirteenth century. A Sligo map poster captures this compact core, the quays along the Garavogue and the harbour area toward the bay. Suburbs spread outward along the roads that lead out of town.
The surrounding landscape is famous in its own right. Benbulben rises to the north, and Knocknarea, with its great cairn, stands to the west above Strandhill. The whole area is closely associated with W. B. Yeats, who is buried at Drumcliff. On a wider map these features frame the town, and the shoreline of the bay adds long, graceful curves to the print.
The short river crosses the town centre from Lough Gill to the sea. Several bridges span it and quays line its banks, making it the natural spine of the whole map.
East of town, the lake opens into a broad expanse of water scattered with small islands, including the Lake Isle of Innisfree made famous by Yeats.
To the west, the tidal bay reaches into the land with sandbanks and inlets, and its irregular shoreline curves toward Rosses Point and Strandhill on either side.

Koteā ko Sligo
Sligo draws people back: former students of the Atlantic Technological University, visitors to Yeats country, surfers at Strandhill and families with roots in the county. A map of the town and its waters is a fitting way to remember the place between lake, river and sea.
Give the print your own title and subtitle, perhaps a line of Yeats or the year you lived there, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The Blueprint style suits the river and lake especially well. The HD files come in six sizes.
