Te mapa
Soligorsk was founded in the late 1950s after large potash deposits were discovered in central Belarus, and its map still reads as a planned town. Wide avenues and broad housing blocks are laid out in a clear, rational pattern, with schools, shops and green spaces placed between the microdistricts in typical Soviet fashion.
To the east, the Soligorsk Reservoir on the Sluch River gives the city a long water edge, with beaches and parkland along the shore. Around the town, the mines and processing plants of Belaruskali occupy large industrial sites, and the pale spoil heaps from potash extraction rise as distinctive shapes in the flat landscape.
A Soligorsk map poster shows a young city still close to the reason it was built. The ordered residential core, the reservoir and the ring of industrial sites form a composition that is simple, legible and very different from the older market towns of the region.
Large residential blocks are arranged along broad avenues, each district with its own courtyards and green spaces, a textbook Soviet urban plan seen clearly from above.
The reservoir on the Sluch River stretches along the eastern side of the city, its long shoreline giving the map a calm open area of water.
Mines, factories and spoil heaps surround the town, the industrial base that brought the city into being and still defines its outer edges.

Koteā ko Soligorsk
For people who grew up in Soligorsk's microdistricts or worked in the mines, this map is a direct portrait of a town built in one generation. The reservoir and the regular plan make it a strong graphic image for the wall.
