Te mapa
Sonāri is the headquarters of Charaideo district in Upper Assam, close to the foothills that mark the border with Nagaland. From above, the town is a loose collection of streets around a main road, surrounded by the regular patchwork of tea estates, whose rows and service roads give the landscape an ordered, almost geometric texture.
The district takes its name from Charaideo, the first capital of the Ahom kingdom, which ruled Assam for about six centuries. Its moidams, the royal burial mounds, were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024. They lie a short distance from Sonāri, among wooded rises southeast of the town.
A Sonāri map poster combines these layers: the market town's everyday streets, the tidy blocks of the tea gardens, and wooded hills to the south. Printed in black and white, it shows a place where farming, trade and a royal past sit close together.
Tea gardens surround the town in large, regular blocks crossed by estate roads, giving the outskirts a distinctive, finely ordered texture.
The Ahom kingdom's first capital and its World Heritage moidams lie close to Sonāri, among wooded land toward the hills.
To the south, the plain gives way to rising ground near the Nagaland border, where the road network becomes sparse and winding.
