Songwŏn Map Poster & Print
Songwŏn lies in Chagang Province, in the rugged interior of northern North Korea. This is some of the most mountainous terrain on the peninsula. From above, settlement follows the valleys, and the town takes the shape the land allows, stretching along the flatter ground beside a watercourse rather than spreading outward evenly.
Few details about the town are widely published, so the map itself tells most of the story. Roads run along the valley bottom, and side roads branch into narrower folds between the hills. Beyond them the land is almost entirely steep and wooded, with little room for building.
A Songwŏn map poster shows a long, narrow town, with its lines crowded together where the valley allows and absent where the slopes rise. The contrast between that dense ribbon and the empty surrounding space makes for a striking, spare composition.
