Te mapa
South Valley is an unincorporated community in Bernalillo County, just south of downtown Albuquerque, lying mainly along the west side of the Rio Grande. From above, it looks very different from the city grid to the north. Long, narrow lots run back from the roads toward the river, following old land divisions, and the cottonwood forest of the bosque forms a green ribbon along the water.
The area has deep Hispanic farming roots, and many of its fields are still watered by acequias, community irrigation ditches that thread between houses, orchards and pastures. Isleta Boulevard runs north to south as the main road. To the west, the land rises toward the mesa, where the irrigated valley gives way to dry, open ground.
A South Valley map poster shows a landscape shaped by water in the desert: the river and its bosque, ditches branching across the fields, and long lots stretching toward them. It is a map of a rural tradition inside a metropolitan area, and it tells that story more clearly than a photograph could.
A wide band of cottonwood forest follows the Rio Grande along the valley's eastern side. On the map it forms a soft, continuous strip beside the river channel.
Community irrigation ditches branch from the river system and run between properties. Their thin, winding lines are a distinctive feature of the valley's map.
Many properties are long, narrow strips stretching back from the roads toward the ditches and river. They create a striped pattern that sets the valley apart from Albuquerque's grid.
