Te mapa
Strunino is a small town in the Aleksandrov district of Vladimir Oblast, close to the border with Moscow Oblast. The railway from Moscow to Yaroslavl runs past it, and the line shapes the map. The town sits beside the tracks, and its streets form a fairly regular pattern on either side of the main routes.
Like many towns in this region, Strunino grew around a textile factory. The mill complex and the housing built for its workers set out the basic plan, which was later filled in with Soviet apartment blocks and rows of private houses with gardens. The mix of large and small plots is still easy to read from above.
A Strunino map poster captures a type of town found across central Russia. The railway gives it a strong axis, the old mill area gives it a centre, and fields and woodland gradually take over at the edges. It is modest, orderly and clearly readable in black and white.
The main line from Moscow cuts past the town. On the poster it is one confident stroke that the rest of the street pattern lines up against.
The old textile factory and its surroundings form a block of larger plots. These stand apart from the finer grain of the houses around them.
Private houses on long, narrow plots form much of the town's edges. On the map this becomes a soft, finely combed texture.
