Te mapa
Seen from above, Samail follows its wadi. The settlement stretches along a valley floor between bare mountain ridges, and date palm groves form a dark ribbon beside the dry riverbed. Villages, roads and walled farms cling to that ribbon, while the slopes on either side remain almost empty. The main highway runs alongside it, a straighter line than the natural course of the valley.
The Samail gap is one of the principal passes through the Hajar Mountains. For centuries it has linked the coast around Muscat with the interior towns of Oman. Agriculture here depends on the falaj system, a network of channels that carries water from springs and underground sources to the palm gardens. Samail's dates are well known across the country.
A Sufālat Samā’il map poster captures a landscape defined by water in a dry place. You see the long corridor of cultivation, the wadi's branching bed and the tight clusters of houses. Black and white works surprisingly well here, because the contrast between the fertile valley and the stony slopes becomes the whole design.
A broad, braided riverbed runs through the valley. It is dry for much of the year but shapes every road and field around it.
Dense date plantations line the valley floor in a continuous strip. They are the most textured area of the map.
The route through the Hajar range narrows the settlement into a long corridor. It gives the map a strong diagonal movement.
