Te mapa
Tahlequah lies in northeastern Oklahoma, where the prairie gives way to the wooded hills of the Ozark foothills. It has been the capital of the Cherokee Nation since 1839, when the Cherokee people re-established their government here after forced removal from their homelands in the Southeast. The Cherokee National Capitol building still stands on the square downtown.
On a map, the compact downtown grid gives way to curving streets and hills on every side. Northeastern State University, which traces its origins to the Cherokee National Female Seminary, occupies a large campus on the north side of town, with open lawns and buildings arranged around quads.
East of town the Illinois River winds through a wooded valley that is popular for canoeing and floating, and Tenkiller Lake lies to the south. A Tahlequah map poster brings together a historic capital, a university town and the river country around it in a single, carefully balanced frame.
The Cherokee National Capitol stands at the heart of downtown. The surrounding grid of streets makes it the natural centre of the town on the map.
Northeastern State University spreads across the north side of Tahlequah. Its open grounds and curving paths form a clear, distinct area within the street network.
The river winds through the hills east of town in wide meanders. Its wooded valley draws canoeists and floaters every summer.
