Taluker Char Doani lies in the southern coastal belt of Bangladesh, in the low, river-crossed country of the Ganges delta. The word char refers to land formed by river sediment, and the name reflects the geography of this area, where islands and banks shift slowly as the rivers move.
On the map, water sets the shape of everything. Broad river channels and smaller creeks cut across the land, and homesteads, paths and roads follow the raised ground between them. Rice fields fill much of the remaining space. The settlement is spread out instead of concentrated in a single town centre.
A Taluker Char Doani map poster shows a delta landscape built from water and land in almost equal measure. Wide curving channels, a mesh of small watercourses and the scattered lines of village roads create a detailed, organic image that feels nothing like a city grid.
Large delta rivers pass through the area. Their broad curves are the strongest shapes on the map and divide the land into sections.
Much of the ground is river-deposited land, flat and low. On the map it appears as open space between the channels and creeks.
Settlement is spread along raised paths and embankments, giving the map a loose network of lines instead of a dense centre.
