Te mapa
Tambo Grande lies in the Piura region of northern Peru, on the Piura River in the San Lorenzo valley. On a map the town has a fairly regular street grid centred on its main square, bordered by the river and surrounded by a vast pattern of irrigated fields, canals and orchards that stands out sharply against the dry land beyond.
The area is one of Peru's main producers of mangoes and limes, thanks to the San Lorenzo irrigation system. Tambo Grande drew national attention in 2002, when residents voted in a local consultation against a proposed open-pit gold mine beneath the town, choosing to protect their agriculture.
A Tambo Grande map poster brings together the ordered town, the curving river and the geometry of irrigated farmland. Canals and field boundaries create fine lines across the frame, framing the dense grid of the town. It is a portrait of a farming community defined by water.
The centre follows a regular pattern of blocks around the main square, a clear, compact layout typical of towns in the Peruvian coastal valleys.
The river runs beside the town, its course marking one edge of the urban area and supplying the valley that makes farming possible.
Canals and field boundaries of the San Lorenzo valley spread around the town, forming a fine geometric texture of mango and lime orchards.
