Te mapa
Tapa sits in the Barnala district of Punjab, in the broad Malwa region, where the land runs almost perfectly flat to every horizon. From above, the town is a dense cluster of short, irregular lanes. A few straighter roads leave it in different directions and quickly thin into the open, rectangular field pattern of one of India's most heavily farmed landscapes.
The place is widely known as Tapa Mandi, a name that points to its role as a grain market. On a map that role shows as larger open blocks and yards near the edge of the older fabric, where trade needs space. The railway crossing the district gives the plan a firm straight line against which the looser, older streets arrange themselves.
A Tapa map poster reduces all of this to line work: the tight knot of the old town, the long clean stroke of the railway, and the roads and field boundaries fading out toward neighbouring villages. It is a modest plan, but a legible one, and it reads well at any size.
The centre is a close-packed grid of narrow, uneven lanes, the kind of dense pattern that grows over generations around a trading town rather than from any single plan.
A straight rail line cuts across the plain near the town, giving the composition a strong linear element that the surrounding roads and lanes seem to lean against.
Beyond the built edge, the map dissolves into a regular mesh of farm tracks and field boundaries typical of Punjab's intensively cultivated plains.

Koteā ko Tapa
For families with roots in Tapa or the wider Barnala district, the map is a quiet way to keep home close, whether it hangs in Ludhiana, Toronto or London. The dense centre and open fields make an honest portrait of a Punjabi market town.
