Te mapa
Tayshet is a town in the west of Irkutsk Oblast, in southern Siberia, and one of the region's key railway junctions. It stands on the Trans-Siberian Railway, and the Baikal–Amur Mainline begins here, heading north-east toward the Lena and eventually the Pacific coast. On a map these lines of track organise the entire town.
The railway yards form a long band of parallel tracks, with the town's streets arranged on either side in a largely regular grid. Where the two main lines split, the tracks fan out in wide curves. The shape is easy to recognise from above and gives the map its strongest geometry.
Beyond the edges of town, the land gives way to forest, small rivers and clearings typical of the Siberian taiga. A Tayshet map poster places the railway at the centre, with the town grid and the surrounding forest around it. It is a portrait of a place whose existence and shape are bound up with the lines that cross the continent.
Where the Baikal–Amur Mainline separates from the Trans-Siberian, the track sweeps away in wide curves. This is the defining shape of the map and the reason for the town's importance.
A long band of parallel sidings runs through the town. It is drawn as a dense cluster of fine lines that divides the streets on either side.
Forest surrounds Tayshet on all sides. The open space it leaves on the map sets off the compact town and the straight lines of the railway.

Koteā ko Tayshet
For many people Tayshet means the railway: shifts at the depot, long journeys east and the start of the BAM. A map of the town and its junction is a fitting gift for railway workers, their families and anyone who has passed through on the way across Siberia.
