Te mapa
Tepotzotlán lies in the State of Mexico, about forty kilometres north of central Mexico City, just off the highway to Querétaro. The historic centre is a small, walkable grid of cobbled streets around a main plaza, with the Sierra de Tepotzotlán rising to the west and newer neighbourhoods and industrial areas spreading across the valley floor to the east.
The town is best known for the former Jesuit college of San Francisco Javier, whose church has one of the most elaborate Churrigueresque facades in Mexico. The complex now houses the Museo Nacional del Virreinato and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. Tepotzotlán is also designated a Pueblo Mágico.
A Tepotzotlán map poster shows the tight colonial core and its plaza, the large block of the Jesuit college and its gardens, the highway running past the town and the hills rising behind it. It is a map with a clear historic heart, making for a focused, detailed print.
The former college and church of San Francisco Javier, with their cloisters and large walled orchard, form one of the biggest single blocks in the centre and a strong anchor for the map.
Cobbled streets and small blocks surround the main plaza, forming a compact historic grid that contrasts with the looser development on the edges of town.
In the hills north-west of town, the tall Arcos del Sitio aqueduct, begun by the Jesuits in the eighteenth century, spans a ravine within an ecological park.
