Thenhippalam is in Malappuram district in northern Kerala, known above all as the home of the University of Calicut. The campus covers a large area of green, gently rolling land, and on the map it forms a clearly defined zone of internal roads, buildings and open ground. The surrounding town looks quite different.
Beyond the campus, northern Kerala's typical pattern takes over. Houses are scattered among coconut palms and gardens instead of standing in compact blocks, and small lanes and paths wind between them in all directions. Main roads connect the area with Kozhikode and Malappuram, and Calicut International Airport is not far away.
