Te mapa
Upland lies at the western edge of California's Inland Empire, where the land starts rising toward the San Gabriel Mountains. It grew out of the Ontario Colony founded by the Chaffey brothers in the 1880s, a citrus settlement laid out on a careful grid. From above, the streets form an orderly lattice that gets gradually more spread out as the ground rises to the north.
Euclid Avenue is the main axis. It runs straight up toward the mountains with a wide landscaped median that was originally planned for the colony. Where it meets Foothill Boulevard, part of historic Route 66, stands the Madonna of the Trail monument, one of twelve along the old National Old Trails Road. The northern edge of the map shows the canyon mouths and the foothills.
An Upland map poster shows a planned city meeting natural terrain. The grid is strict and calm at the bottom and meets the curves of the foothills at the top. Euclid Avenue is the strongest line on the sheet. In Paper or Sand, the composition takes on the warm, dry feel of the area.

Foothill Boulevard, part of historic Route 66, crosses Euclid at the Madonna of the Trail monument, a meeting point of two major routes.
At the north, the grid gives way to the curves and canyon mouths of the San Gabriel foothills, a natural boundary on the map.
