Urmar lies in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab, in the Doaba region between the Beas and Sutlej rivers. It forms a joint urban area with the neighbouring town of Tanda, and the two are often named together as Urmar Tanda. The surrounding plain is flat and intensively farmed, crossed by canals, rail and the roads linking it with Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar.
The older part of town has a dense web of narrow lanes, the kind of irregular pattern that grew before modern planning, while newer neighbourhoods spread outward along wider and straighter roads.
