Valle Hermoso is a town in northern Tamaulipas, not far from the border region around Matamoros. The land here is almost completely flat, and the map shows a very orderly place: a grid of streets at the centre, surrounded by long rectangular fields divided by straight roads and irrigation channels. Seen from above, town and farmland share the same geometry.
The town grew as an agricultural centre, and farming still shapes both its economy and its landscape. The surrounding fields are part of a wider irrigated farming district in the lower Rio Grande area. That is why rural roads run so straight and parcels are so evenly measured.
