Vellūr is a settlement in the far south of Kerala, India, in the coastal lowlands north of Thiruvananthapuram. Towns in this part of the state rarely have a sharp edge. Houses sit in their own plots among coconut palms and garden trees, and settlements run into one another along the roads, forming a pattern that is spread out rather than dense.
From above, that pattern becomes a fine network of lanes. They branch, curve and join again, following small rises in the ground and the lines of old property boundaries. Main roads carry most of the traffic and stand out as stronger strokes. Around them, the smaller paths form a mesh that fills most of the frame.
Kerala's southern coast is shaped by water: the sea, lagoons and the streams that feed them. The land around Vellūr belongs to that low, wet landscape.
